Fall 2022 Trends

By Brady Pitcher

As the seasons change and the weather gets colder, it is time to start thinking about what we will be wearing this fall. Here are some fall trends to look out for as the most fashionable season of the year approaches.

The overall silhouette of fall clothing will be ill fitting and bulky. From oversized jackets and hoodies to wide-fit baggy pants, the looser look will be in, this was foreshadowed in some of the summer trends like baggy shorts we have seen in the past few months. Oversized clothing is a trend we have been seeing lately with brands like Balenciaga who have really pushed the envelope on what “oversized clothing” means to them.

Given how often the 1980s are referenced in television shows and other media, it makes sense that ‘80s fashion will return for fall. It was about time that flared pants and closely cropped shirts, for both men and women, started to make a comeback. Since the end of summer, we have noticed an increase in the number of people sporting their favorite ‘80s silhouette.

For both men and women, the 1980s were a decade of excess and maximalism. As a result, the decade featured edgy fashion, vivid hues, and striking silhouettes. Men are seen wearing loose blouses and T-shirts with 80s fashion influences nowadays, while bomber jackets, leather jackets, windbreakers, and sweaters are also once again in style. Women, on the other hand, are being seen wearing oversized blazers, sequins, and grunge inspired ensembles.

For bottoms this season we are seeing very baggy/flared styles. Jeans are always going to be a staple in the wardrobe but this year we are seeing them baggier and more wide fit. Another type of jean/bottom we are seeing is flared bottoms. These add an interesting shape to the outfit and connect to the 80s aesthetic mentioned earlier in the article. Cargo pants are also going to be huge this fall. Everywhere you look on Instagram fashion influencers are rocking their cargos in all shapes and colors. Particularly the wide leg cargos are trending. Brands like Jaded London have taken over Instagram with their cargo pants which look like they are being worn by everyone and their mother! These are easy to pair with your shearling or bomber jackets since they have that workwear look as well. Or you could opt for an oversized sweater as seen lately on social media.

Other fashion trend forecasters also predict themes such as grunge, as previously said, prep, and even some business casual ensembles to trend on the runway and on the streets. Miu Miu has had a comeback with their take on prep and business casual looks in recent shows, with their iconic cargo mini skirt.

There are a few staple pieces you will absolutely need to add to your closet this fall. The white tank with jeans look was a major trend in the summer, as mentioned in our piece on summer trends, and it will continue trending in the fall. This is because of its versatility as an outfit. With these two pieces in your fall wardrobe, you can quickly update your closet by adding a favorite cardigan or jacket.
As we move into the colder season, jackets become an everyday essential. This year we saw a trend in leather, shearling, and bomber jackets make an appearance thanks to the ‘80s trends circling back around. Jackets are an effortless way to add interest to an ensemble and keep you warm. The grunge style that is projected to be popular in the fall season pairs wonderfully with the never out of style leather jacket. Leather jackets are also a must have for the fall season, and as we know will never go out of style. Whether black or brown, leather jackets, and leather in general, will continue to be on trend. With fur or sherpa on the inside, a shearling jacket for men is a fashionable way to stay warm. One of the major trends this season will be bomber jackets, thanks to the well-known film, Top Gun. Although it is a simple jacket, it has a significant impact on how it looks. They were initially worn by military pilots during World War II and were created to be practical, warm, and allow for a lot of movement and action, but have recently been used for aesthetic purposes too. This also blends well into the trend of workwear which has recently started to gain attention with brands like Carhart and Dickies becoming more popular. Layering jackets are always a fall essential but these three types should be at the top of your fall must have list for the 2022 season.

Of course, like every other year, boots will be popular. On the runways of shows like Brandon Maxwell, boots of all kinds, including combat boots and knee-high boots, have been spotted. Along with shearling jackets, fuzzy or shearling boots are currently in style. High platform heels are the way to go if you want to dress a little fancier. For example, countless designers such as Versace, Valentino, and Bottega Veneta have made their versions of the high platform heel. It has the class of a high heel mixed with a touch of camp and interest perfect for today’s style.

As far as what colors you should be wearing, you can never go wrong with neutrals. Creams, browns, and greens are perfect for the fall season and reflect on the color of fall very nicely. Pantone also expects red, yellow, and purples to be very trendy this season. This makes sense as they also stand for the colors and the foliage happening around this season. People want to feel that fall energy and dressing for as it helps feed this energy. Red is predicted to be the color of the season already making its appearances with celebrities like Timothee Chalamet at the Bones and All movie premiere in Venice.. Overall, the trend for fall is oversized comfiness of all kinds. Picking out pieces that are comfortable and and easy to wear while staying stylish is what we are looking for.
